Plan to fire all its teachers roils poor RI city

CENTRAL FALLS, RI The Central Falls School Committee this week approved a plan to fire every educator at its underperforming high school at the end of the school year. No more than half could be hired back.

A federal effort to make over failing schools offers firing the entire teaching staff as one of the options.

Superintendent Frances Gallo earlier asked the teachers' union to agree to changes including a longer school day and extra tutoring by teachers.

Parent Robert Rivera says he thinks the teachers should have agreed to offer students more academic help. His daughter will attend the school next year.
