Elderly man dies in apartment fire in east Houston

HOUSTON The victim's body was found inside his downstairs apartment unit at a complex off Hershe near Harlem. A neighbor was about to go to sleep when he realized there was a fire. He says it took him a few minutes to figure out where the fire was coming from.

"We went downstairs and we saw smoke coming from the window and we knocked on the door. Nobody answered," said neighbor Shane Freeman. "By the time the fire department got here and got the door open, it was flames and smoke."

Arson and homicide detectives are both investigating the cause of the fire.
