"It's gonna be some type of domestic disturbance between the vehicle behind us and possibly the subject we have in custody," said Detective Matt Bruegger with the Pasadena Police Department. "He contacted the police department and then there was a short chase, short foot chase and then he was apprehended."
Zayas' ex-wife was driving and pulled into a gas station seeking help. Maldonado, 31, died at the scene.
Police say Zayas had the couple's two children in his car at the time, but they were not hurt. Zayas, 48, is charged with murder.
