Bats invade area high school

MONT BELVIEU, TX The bats have been sighted at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu. School district officials confirmed bats were spotted early this morning in the main school hallway. Students were held in the gymnasium until classes began.

The sightings began about a week ago, and more than three dozen bats were said to have been trapped on Monday. The main corridor has been sealed and students are changing classes by walking between the classroom wings of the school on outside sidewalks.

The school administration is monitoring the situation and they say they will not allow students into any area of the building where bats are observed.

The school district is working with Jef Farrell and the City of Mont Belvieu Animal Control on the removal of the bats. A company specializing in the removal of bats is also being brought on board today to assist the effort.

School officials say that to date, no student has come in direct contact with a bat and no bats have tested positive for disease. Parents have been kept informed of the situation by letter.
