California boy, 3, dead after pit bull attack

APPLE VALLEY, CA The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department said in a statement Sunday that 3-year-old Omar Martinez was declared dead at Saint Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley.

Authorities answered a 911 call Saturday afternoon reporting that a boy had been attacked by a dog and had stopped breathing. Paramedics found the boy unresponsive and took him to the hospital, where he died about two hours later.

Authorities say the dog was aggressive toward firefighters when they arrived at the Apple Valley home, and a sheriff's deputy shot and killed the animal.

The coroner's office says an autopsy will be conducted on the boy, and sheriff's deputies and animal control officials are investigating.
