Mudslide kills 30 people in Brazilian city

At least 30 people have been killed and at least 10 have been injured today in mudslides in a coastal region near Rio de Janiero. Brazilian authorities say a rain-loosened slab of hillside collapsed on three houses and an upscale waterfront lodge on a resort island after New Year's celebrations early today, killing at least 19 people.

In another section of the same city (Angra dos Reis), 11 people died earlier today from another mudslide.

Officials say rain-related deaths in Rio de Janeiro state from three days of heavy rains has reached 50. Many perished yesterday in shanties collapsed under mud or rain in the greater Rio de Janeiro city area.

It's feared the entire region's death toll could rise.

Local authorities say nearly 80 mudslides have been reported throughout the area, toppling trees and destroying power lines.
