Tire shop owner fatally shoots robber

HOUSTON The trouble started about 8:30pm when Houston police say several suspects in a black SUV rolled onto the El Mante tire shop property. Authorities say two men got out and tried to rob two people at gunpoint.

One of those two attempted robbery victims, the shop owner, pulled out a gun and shot one of the suspects. He died at the scene. All the other suspects took off in the SUV.

One resident nearby heard the gunfire, but didn't realize until later what was happening in her neighborhood.

"It sounded just like, like fireworks. I didn't think it was a gun," said resident Jerry Conley. "The most interesting thing is that my girlfriend that lives across the street, she was saying how she kept looking out later and still seeing the police car long after the fireworks were over. She then realized, of course, that it wasn't fireworks. It was guns."

The two suspects are described only as a black male and a Hispanic male with a light complexion. Police are looking for the vehicle the suspects got away in. It's described as a Mercury Mountaineer SUV, black with 16-inch polished rims. If you have any information in this case, please call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. You can remain anonymous.

Police are also saying they are looking for a white Ford F-150 crew cab pickup also believed to be involved in this incident, although authorities have not said how it is involved.

The shop owner wasn't injured during the attempted robbery. The victim's identity hasn't been released. An investigation is underway.
