Teen killed in ATV accident in NE Harris County

HOUSTON Family members were devastated as they tried to comprehend the tragedy that unfolded in their neighborhood near Hartwick and Allwood. They say 15-year-old Fransico Gonzalez and his six-year-old cousin, Victor, were riding on a small ATV when a car hit them, killing Francisco,

"He's real close to me, so I was a little devastated," said relative Luis Ruiz. "It hurts a lot."

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff Department says the two children were traveling east on the street in front of the Gonzalez family home when they veered into oncoming traffic. The driver of the car tried to avoid the children, but couldn't. Investigators say the ATV isn't street legal, and should never have been on the road.

"If they want their kids to have these things, they should operate them off the roadway, where it's safe to do so and where obviously there's not going to be cars," said Sgt. Susan Cotter with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

This was supposed to be a joyous time for the Gonzalez family. Victor and his siblings were visiting from Kentucky. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and now, family members are praying that Victor survives, while coming to grips with the death of Francisco

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says they will turn over all their information to the district attorney's office, but right now, charges appear unlikely.
