Mummified baby found in NW Houston apartment

HOUSTON The discovery was made in an apartment unit on Sherwood Lane near TC Jester in northwest Houston Wednesday night. No one answered the door to the apartment there Thursday.

Authorities found the body at around 11:30pm wrapped in blankets and placed outside. Its where the baby was originally found that is equally disturbing,

The 24-year-old mother, who has not been charged with any crime, gave birth to the child two months ago on September 18. Police say the mother told them the baby was stillborn and she wrapped it in blankets and placed it under a bathroom sink where it stayed until Wednesday night. That's when the parents of the mother visited and found the corpse when they were looking for the source of a foul odor.

Authorities say the mother, who has not been identified, hid the pregnancy from her family. Neighbor says the woman never spoke about the pregnancy.

"She never said, but we women saw her," said neighbor Maria, who didn't want to give her last name. "She told me a while ago. I asked her how many months are you. She said 'Nine months.' After that, I don't know what happened. I never asked again."

Investigators say what happens next determines on the cause of death of the baby boy. An autopsy will be performed.
