Massive logjam has leaders worried

SIMONTON, TX According to Simonton Mayor Pro Tem Daniel McJunkin, the logjam under the Brazos River Bridge at FM 1093 was first noticed back in May when some city officials were looking for a landing site for kayakers. Logjams are a common occurrence, and usually clear on their own.

Officials have been monitoring this logjam and it has grown larger, while showing no signs of breaking up. There are concerns that the logs may damage underwater cables in the area or even cause flooding upstream. Once they are dislodged city leaders fear the logs could damage bridges south of FM 1093, especially the bridge at FM 1489.

McJunkin says the city contacted TxDOT in June, but officials there are still examining the problem. At this point, McJunkin has been given no clear idea on how the situation could be cleared up.
