Museum plans block party

HOUSTON The sound of traditional African music welcomed supporters to a ribbon cutting ceremony. For years, the museum has held traveling exhibits in borrowed spaces. The location on Caroline near Wentworth will finally give the museum a permanent home.

"It will celebrate the beginnings of multiculturalism from an African American point of view," said John Guess with the Museum Development Campaign. "But it will celebrate all of Houston. Our programming is multicultural with a respect for the past and a healthy respect for the present and the future."

The permanent museum is under renovation and is expected to open in 2011.
