DPS to ride school buses

AUSTIN, TX Texas state troopers, starting Monday, will ride school buses as part of National School Bus Safety Week. Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said Friday that troopers will be watching for motorists illegally passing school buses.

Mange told The Associated Press that DPS had a similar operation a few years ago. She declined to say which districts will have troopers on buses. Mange said "folks should just assume there's going to be a trooper on the bus."

Texas law requires motorists to stop for a school bus when the red alternating flashing lights are on. Violators face fines of up to $1,000.
