Seven people have been rescued after their vessel capsized in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 130 miles southeast of Galveston. A Coast Guard statement Saturday said the vessel, Missin' Link, homeported in Freeport, Texas, sent out an alert Friday night.

The Eighth Coast Guard District command center in New Orleans sent out broadcasts asking mariners to assist and then activated rescue operations.

At 3 a.m. Saturday the Coast Guard rescued six people who were on a life raft. The crew of a 250-foot research vessel, Mystic Viking, pulled one person from the water to safety around 6 a.m. Arrangements were being made for the medevac of one person while the others were being taken to shore.

Coast Guard official Kevin Robb credits the Mystic Viking crew with aiding in the rescue.
