More than a thousand animals have been recovered from horrible conditions at a home in northwest Harris County. It's the biggest animal bust in our area and may be one of the biggest ever in the country. [PHOTOS: Animals seized from property]

At last count 1,045 animals were taken off the property of the house. Investigators told us this is an animal mill with most of the animals being sold around town at local flea markets. Unfortunately when authorities arrived, not all of the animals were found alive.

"We are actually in the process of the biggest, or one of the biggest, animal rescues in the history of the United States," said Meera Nandlal of the Houston SPCA.

After receiving an anonymous tip around 5:30pm Wednesday, investigators with the Houston SPCA and Precinct 1 Constable's Office arrived at this property in the 6500 block of Green in northwest Harris County. More than 1,000 animals were rescued that lacked proper food, shelter and water, with many confined in trash-littered cages at the perimeter of the property.

At least 20 animals were already dead including ducks, gerbils and hamsters. Investigators say the array of animals was astonishing: ponies, ducks, birds, dogs, snakes and many more.

The property owners are cooperating, telling investigators it was a business run through local flea markets.

"What they have told us is they have all these animals because they sell them to flea markets," said Nandlal.

We asked to speak with the property owners, but they declined to comment. Precinct 1 Constable's Office says animal cruelty charges will more than likely be filed.

As for the animals, the SPCA told us that once they are awarded the animals through a court hearing, it's possible that some may be offered up for adoption.
