Store closing means deals on furnishings

One Houston business is closing its doors and selling off a warehouse full of furniture. The store supplied the furniture you'd see in model homes in new neighborhoods. Because of the slowdown in home building, the market has dried up and now the inventory is on clearance. The housing market may seem unrelated to a warehouse full of designer furniture, but in fact it is closely tied.

Dan Johnson of the Scott Randall Designer Showroom said, "When you go look at a model home and you always wondered where it came from, this is it."

For the last eight years Johnson and Michael Gonzalez have supplied designers the furnishings they displayed in hundreds of model homes around the nation. Over the last two years, the demand for new homes has come to a halt and its impact has been so severe that now this Houston business is closing its doors.

"There basically are no model homes being produced," Johnson said. "There are a few by some national builders but so many of them that we started with have filed bankruptcy, some of them just don't produce model homes anymore."

Because of the national slow down, owners had to let more than 20 employees go before finally deciding to close their doors for good. They say the down turn impacts designers, decorators and merchandisers.

Gonzalez said, "They've all been hit, everybody, from closing up businesses to losing their homes. We sold our home."

Now Scott Randall will sell millions in inventory to the general public for the very first time. Susan Smith has furnished new homes from the designer showroom for years.

'Very good value," Smith said. "You have an opportunity to come in here where normally home owners simply could not walk in."

Owners have about 90 days to sell their inventory which includes complete dining room sets, area rugs, one of a kind pieces of art and lamps in all shapes and sizes.

The warehouse is open every day until the things are sold. It's located at 11413 Todd Street. That's off of Hempstead Highway right outside the 610 Loop. Right now things are marked down about half off. You can find more details on the store hours on the Consumer Blog.
