New HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier got a firsthand look at a special program aimed at helping kids stay in school.Dr. Grier toured the Advanced Virtual Academy Charter School at Scarborough High School in northwest Houston. The school offers at-risk students flexible schedules, including nights and weekends, along with a combination of classroom and online learning.

"I've had a lot of people say, 'Yes, if they would just conform.' Okay. But they're not going to and so we have to be able to offer learning in a platform and in a surrounding like this that they can relate to and be successful in," Dr. Grier said.

HISD has six high schools in the district's central region offering this type of program.
