A San Antonio police officer who accidentally shot a robbery victim while firing at the alleged suspect has been cleared of criminal conduct. Officer William Karmen was flagged down to intervene as a man allegedly beat a 45-year-old Austin man near San Antonio College. The officer ordered the alleged suspect to stop, and police say the suspect pointed his weapon at Karmen.

Karmen fired five times. The victim, James Whitehead, was on the ground behind the alleged suspect and was struck by one of the bullets. He later died of his beating injuries and the gunshot wound.

On Tuesday, Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed and San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Karmen has been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing.
