Vehicle stolen from police parking lot

McAllen police didn't have to go far to reach the scene of a crime. A man accused of stealing a pickup from a public parking lot outside police headquarters was charged Thursday with auto theft and two counts of evading arrest.

Sgt. Joel Morales says the theft and chase happened Wednesday night. The man abandoned the truck, ran to a parking lot at McAllen International Airport and was captured under a parked vehicle.

Morales says 29-year-old Oliver Uresti of Reynosa, Mexico, was held on $40,000 bail. Morales says Uresti does not yet have an attorney.

Morales says the vehicle that was stolen belongs to a police department employee. He declined to elaborate. The truck's steering column was damaged during the theft.
