Text an extraterrestrial

August 12, 2009 4:48:34 PM PDT
Here's your chance to reach out and text a possible extraterrestrial. A new Australian-run web site is giving people the opportunity to send a text that will be beamed to Gliese 581D. That's the nearest earth-like planet outside of our solar system. Here's a look at a few of the messages so far:

  • "I think you'll like it here. We're one big family."
  • Ryan H. -- Joplin, Missouri, USA

  • "Please come here. I'll be waiting for you to take me with you."
  • Jessica Castillo Manso -- Coquimbo, Australia

  • "We have delicious food on Earth, but please don't eat the humans."
  • Bill -- Orlando, Florida, USA

The messages are being collected over the next 12 days from people all over the world. Don't start setting up the guest room just yet. It will take about 20 years for the messages to arrive, and there's no guarantee you'll get a response.
