Road crew worker killed by tire

A road crew worker is dead after a 200 pound tire came off a tanker truck and struck him. Lewisville police Capt. Todd Taylor identified the victim as 52-year-old state contract worker J. Pedro Garcia.

The accident happened Monday when a truck carrying flammable liquid lost its first right rear wheel just after crossing the I-35 southbound bridge over Lewisville Lake.

That tire struck two vehicles. Taylor said the truck continued for about half a mile when the second wheel came off and it struck the worker who was outside of his vehicle.

An air ambulance flew Garcia to a hospital where he later died.

Manager Robert Sorenson said the truck company, Safety-Kleen, is cooperating with police during the investigation.
