Family of dead jail inmate filing suit

The family of an inmate who died in a Harris County jail has filed suit against the county, alleging wrongful death. In the lawsuit filed Thursday, the family of Margarita Saavedra accuses the county of providing inadequate medical care. The lawsuit says that led to Saavedra's January 2008 death.

Family attorney Randall Sorrels says the 44-year-old woman died after a staph infection in her left knee spread. Saavedra complained about severe leg pain and was taken to a jail clinic but never saw a doctor. The infection spread, and she died six days later.

The Justice Department investigated the jail in the summer of 2008 in response to requests for a review of its medical and sanitation conditions.
