Eight hurt in blast at explosives plant

McARTHUR, OH Austin Powder Co. Executive Vice President Mike Gleason says the blast about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the plant near McArthur was in a building where workers make detonating cord used in commercial blasting.

Four injured workers were taken to hospitals. Others were treated at the scene. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

Cleveland-based Austin Powder manufactures explosives for the mining and construction industries and performs blasting services. About 200 people work at the McArthur facility, which was built in the 1930s and has dozens of buildings.
