Five rescued after boat capsizes

July 28, 2009 9:11:44 AM PDT
Five people suffered cuts and bruises after their small boat capsized in choppy water near jetties off Corpus Christi. TV video of part of the rescue show the overturned boat bobbing in the strong waves and nearby beachgoers helping emergency personnel.

Police say a 70-year-old woman had to be pulled from beneath the boat Monday afternoon. Lt. Henry Sepulveda says the woman was in an air pocket and should recover.

Friends say some of the boaters were from O'Donnell, near Lubbock, and were in Corpus Christi for a World Changers community service project.

Pat Vincent says one of the victims is a farmer and that "he wanted to go out in the boat so bad."
