Three killed, 7 wounded in Newark

NEWARK, NJ The first shooting happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday near Newark's Weequahic Park, west of downtown.

Police say five people were shot -- three men and two women -- by someone firing from a passing car. One of the women, 35-year-old Nakisha Allen of Newark, was pronounced dead.

The second shooting occurred a few miles away just before 4 p.m. Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy says at least two men got out of a car and began firing on the victims, who were sitting on a stoop. Two of the men were killed.

Two others were wounded in a third shooting about 7 p.m. in a neighborhood a few miles north of the second incident.

Police say they don't believe the first two shootings are related. Officials haven't made an assessment on the third incident.
