A&M begins process of picking new president

COLLEGE STATION, TX Elsa Murano quit as Texas A&M University president a month ago, less than two weeks after disclosure of an unflattering performance review written by A&M System Chancellor Mike McKinney.

McKinney said she failed to live up to hopes and expectations.

Murano was the first female and first Hispanic president in the university's 132-year history and had been in the job for just 17 months. She succeeded Robert Gates, who left to become President George W. Bush's defense secretary. Gates remains in that post under President Barack Obama.
