Armed naked man fatally shot by officers

July 14, 2009 9:02:58 AM PDT
Police say a naked man was shot and killed overnight outside a substation in northeast Houston. It happened around 1:30am after several calls came into 911 reporting that someone was driving erratically and firing a handgun out of a car window along I-610 in the Wayside area.

The suspect then came to the police substation on Ley near East Houston and rammed through the security gate, driving into the area officers park their cars, and started driving around the back part of the substation.

The suspect then apparently hit three cars and pulled into the sally port, where he got out of the vehicle. He was not wearing any clothing.

"The officers inside this area here are taking in prisoners to be booked and they don't know what is going on. They look out and they see this vehicle striking another vehicle," said HPD spokesperson John Cannon. "They don't know if they are dealing with someone who is irate that someone was getting booked as a prisoner who he or she might have known. They had no idea what they were dealing with."

The officers say the suspect pointed a gun at them and fired one shot. Six officers then opened fire on the armed man, striking him. The suspect, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident. All officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol in an officer-involved shooting incident. The officers' names haven't been released, but we've learned that one of the officers has been with the department for 15 years, one for 13 years, one for 6 years, two for two years and one officer is a rookie with HPD.

Investigators hope an autopsy will help them determine if the the suspect had anything in his system. The incident is under investigation.
