A Pearland man is in custody after he was allegedly observed masturbating at the Friendswood Public Library, 416 S. Friendswood.Police were called to the library at approximately 7:20 pm Thursday when a library employee reportedly observed Thomas Whitmarsh, 68, exposing himself and masturbating while seated in an open area of the library.

Whitmarsh told police he had recently been caught doing the same thing by Pearland police. He told local police he had not been cited in that incident.

Police officials were not able to confirm this story with Pearland authorities. Friendswood library personnel had consulted with police on two previous occasions in June expressing concern about Whitmarsh's suspicious behavior at the library.

Whitmarsh was charged with indecent exposure, a class B misdemeanor with a $1,000 bond. He is currently being held in the Friendswood municipal jail. Whitmarsh was also issued a criminal trespass warning for the Friendswood Public Library.
