Perry: New law means lower property taxes

HOUSTON House Bills 8 and 36-13 provide more oversight of local appraisal districts, slow the process of increasing home values, and give disabled veterans a 100% homestead exemption.

While you may not see a change in your taxes right away, this is a step in slowing the pace at which they increase.

"I happen to think it's unfair for Texans to get stuck with higher and higher taxes as these local appraisals answer tax cuts," said Gov. Perry.

The new laws also allow appraisal district to value homes at their market value as a home, not as land for a potential commercial use, which could cost the homeowner thousands of dollars every year.
