New charges for father in deadly accident

HOUSTON Police say it happened after /*Chanton Jenkins*/ drove his car into a waterway in north Harris County back in April.

Jenkins did not appear before the judge for the formal reading of the new charges against him. It was yesterday that a grand jury indicted him on five counts of intoxicated manslaughter.

It was on April 18 when the father drove his car into a swollen drainage ditch, killing five children who were inside of the vehicle. Three of those children were Jenkins' own kids.

Police say alcohol was known to be in Jenkins' system. They also believe that he may have been high on another unknown substance. They are still waiting for toxicology reports to come back before they confirm what else was in his system.

Because of the new charges, Jenkins now faces life in prison.

"Intoxication manslaughter is a stackable offense, so in essence he could receive at the most, five life sentences that could be stacked on top of each other," said Harris County Asst. District Attorney Alison Baimbridge.

Jenkins' next court appearance is scheduled for August 12.
