Judge blocks closure of homeless shelter

A judge has blocked closure of a homeless shelter in Temple where structural and safety issues were raised. Judge Gordon Adams issued a temporary injunction and ordered another hearing Aug. 26.

The Temple Building and Standards Commission on June 1 ordered Martha's Kitchen to close its thrift store, furniture warehouse and men's dormitory. Officials cited plumbing and electrical problems at additional structures, ordering repairs within 90 days.

Wednesday's order found Martha's Kitchen would suffer harm by not being able to provide food and shelter and by immediate closure.

Volunteer board chairman Ray Severn says Martha's Kitchen will "continue to feed, clothe and house the homeless."

An attorney for the city, Enid Wade, says Temple has the option to appeal.
