City of Conroe mandates water restrictions

CONROE, TX The city put was placed in a stage 2 restrictions Saturday. Conroe hasn't seen any significant rain in about a month and half Couple that with the fact that the city lost one of its wells and that led to this decision.

Stage 2 water restrictions means residents are now prohibited from watering during daylight hours. Any watering lawns or filling up pools or even hand washing your car can only be done between the hours of 10pm and 4am.

Anyone caught violating those rules can face a fine of up to $2,000. The city says the restrictions are important because the total daily demand of water is running at 95 percent of the city's production. Some residents we talked to say the new rules are tough, but they will manage.

"If you lose a few plants, you'll lose a few plants," said resident Joe Burlison. "If you have to water at night, you'll have to water at night. It's an inconvenience, but it's a minor inconvenience."

"Anything that conserves the water is what we are asking for," said Conroe Water Superintendent Jason Miller. "Stage 2 is basically a mandatory stage, but we are not citing anyone. We are just asking for some voluntary cooperation."

Conroe is not the only place facing challenges, The Woodlands as well as Pearland both have voluntary water conservation rules in place. The city of Houston is running on normal operations with no restrictions so far.

Conroe is the only place with mandatory rules at this time. The last time rules were put in place was in October of 2008.
