Boyfriend charged with burning woman

HOUSTON Uriel Vargas Alvarado, 25, is charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury. He is accused of assaulting and burning his girlfriend, Juana Patricia DeLeon Hernandez, 33, who was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

According to police, Hernandez was in her apartment at 9700 Braeburn Glen around 11:40pm Sunday when she heard a knock at her door and opened it. At that time, her boyfriend, Alvarado, reportedly punched her and knocked her to the ground. He then allegedly threw gasoline on her body, set her on fire and fled the scene.

Neighbors heard Hernandez's screams and came to her assistance. She told neighbors her boyfriend had assaulted her.

Paramedics transported Hernandez to the hospital where doctors said she suffered fourth degree burns to more than 70 percent of her body and remains in critical condition.
