Texas soldier killed in NC car accident

Army officials say a soldier from Texas was killed after suffering injuries from an automobile accident in Fayetteville, N.C. Matthew B. Thomas was a 23-year-old wheeled vehicle mechanic from Lockhart. He was involved in an accident Friday morning that is under investigation.

Thomas was part of the 82nd Airborne Division and has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a National Defense Service Ribbon.

Thomas joined the Army in June 2004 and completed basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. He earned his Army parachutist's badge at Fort Benning, Ga.

Thomas is survived by his daughter, Natalie, and his parents, Ronald and Catherine Thomas, of Lockhart.
