Man arrested for arson, killing father

HOUSTON Landon Brook has been charged with murder and arson for killing his father in a northeast Houston house fire.

It only took firefighters about 15 minutes to put out the flames at the home on Manitou near McCarty. But when firefighters did a second search, they found a body.

After the body was removed from the charred home, code enforcement came out, condemned the building because it was unsafe and had the structure knocked down.

Even though there is a huge pile of debris left from the burned out home, some are not upset to see the house gone.

"The people that lived there, we never knew who it was," said nearby resident Frank Trevino. "They were always in different places."

Trevino has lived on the street for the last 15 years. He says the owner of the house abandoned it several years ago. Since then, he says he has witnessed sketchy and suspicious behavior around the house.

He says on average, he calls police once every week and half on the squatters. So when he woke up this morning to the sound of fire engines, part of him smiled.

"I felt relieved this morning, but when I found out there was a body in there, well then I felt sorry," said Trevino.

Fire crews say when they first saw the body, it was so badly burned that they couldn't tell if it was a male or a female.

The victim's name has not been released.
