Noose causes stir in city council meeting

HOUSTON Police sergeant Shelby Stewart carried the noose into the meeting and asked the council about allegations of racism in the Houston Fire Department. The issue centers on a noose that turned up in a fire captain's locker.

"It's particularly offensive to have a constituent come before council and hold it up so pictures can be taken of it," said councilmember Mike Sullivan. "It's clearly inciteful, I think it's counterproductive."

"As a citizen of the city of Houston, I think you're well within your right to be here, certainly to bring it to our attention," said councilmember Jarvis Johnson. "There're many times when not enough is being said true enough this body won't do anything about it."

Activists called for the firing of the fire captain who had the noose in his locker. The captain received a reprimand.
