Double shooting at Humble business

Gunshots rang out in the parking lot of a strip center in Humble. When it was over, one woman was wounded and one man was dead, shot by a police officer. It's a scary situation. The busy shopping center off FM 1960 not far from Deerbrook Mall was packed with people at the height of the lunch hour. About 75 to 100 people were inside the Workforce Solutions office, where they usually update their resumes. But on this day they were ducking bullets.

A woman inside a red car was about to go to the Workforce Solutions branch office, when someone she knew came after her. Witness Andre Jones was inside when the shots rang out.

He recalled, "I was on the computer doing some emails. All of a sudden I heard two gun shots, and i looked up, there she was coming out of the vehicle and he was shooting at her."

Hit in the shoulder, the woman ran toward the Workforce offices, where customers dragged her to safety and tried to help.

"We were trying to stop her bleeding," explained witness Greg Graham. "I went to the bathroom to get her paper towels and stuff to kind of absorb the blood."

Eyewitnesses say police arrived within seconds and immediately took action.

Lt. Jay Wrobliske with the Humble Police Department told Eyewitness News, "We had an officer arrive on the scene that pulled up, saw he had a weapon. She fired one time at the subject. The subject did go down."

Police say although the man fired a number of shots at the woman, the officer only fired once at him. The man was pronounced dead, and the woman is expected to survive. Fortunately, no one else at this busy shopping center was hurt. Though for witnesses, like Jill Barrera, seeing a shooting just a few feet away is traumatic.

"You just don't have any idea of how you might feel or you might think," Barrera said. "I think about my children. I have two beautiful girls in school and I thought, I just want to go pick them up at school right now, you know, and hold them and tell them how much I love them."

The investigation is ongoing. The female victim is recovering at Ben Taub Hospital.
