Last year, the First Colony Little League Dream League received a grant from a field refurbishment program sponsored by Minute Maid and the Astros. The newly renovated field was unveiled at a ribbon cutting ceremony in Sugar Land.

The kids played a brief, two-inning game with Backe on the mound.

"Just to be out here and seeing the kids participate in a game we all love, it's something special," said Backe. "They seem to acknowledge the fact that the fame is fun. They understand the game and they enjoy it."

Backe, a Galveston native, says he's especially proud to help refurbish local ball fields since he's from this area.
