It happened around 7pm as officers went to an apartment complex on Fondren near Bissonnet for a domestic disturbance call.

The suspect's wife told the 911 operator that her husband had been drinking. She also accused him of hitting their kids with a belt and said she was fed up.

According to investigators, Jose Alexi Sorto, 29, told his wife that when police got there, he would be waiting for them. Investigators say when officers arrived, Sorto was armed with a machete in one hand and a knife in the other.

"The officers approached the suspect and they gave him commands in English and Spanish and he did not comply and lunged at the officer," said Jodie Silva with the Houston Police Department. "At that point, the officer fired his weapon and hit the suspect one time."

Sorto was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer, Xavier Flores, has been with the Houston Police Department for the last year and a half. He will be placed on desk duty pending the outcome on an internal investigation, which is customary in all officer-involved shootings.

Investigators have said they've had no prior incidents involving Sorto or his family.
