Overpass jumper suspected of killing his ex

WACO, TX Jessie Zapata, 33, died Sunday night at a Waco hospital after jumping off the overpass onto Interstate 35 near State Highway 6 in Robinson, police said.

Police received calls just before 9 p.m. that a man had pulled over and was walking around on the overpass south of Waco, and one caller said he cut or stabbed himself before jumping, a Waco police spokeswoman said.

Police shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate for about 30 minutes after the man jumped. Robinson police officer John Donahue said he found a knife on the road near where the man landed.

About 10 p.m., Carolina Tovar's son returned home from the movies and found her stabbed to death in her Lacy-Lakeview home near Waco, authorities said.

Police said Tovar, 28, met Zapata at work about seven years ago, and he was the father of one of her children, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported in its online edition Monday.
