Authorities believe the shooting was an accident, but a man will still face charges. Robert Odom, 20, is facing a manslaughter charge but Houston police are calling this an accident. They say Odom didn't know the gun was loaded.
The victim, say investigators, is Allison Aubrecht, 17, a student at Memorial High School. Investigators say Odom had friends over for a party at his house last night and was showing off his gun when it went off and struck Aubrecht. She died of a gunshot wound to the head.
Neighbors say it's a horrific reminder to never play with a gun.
"I've had one up in the cabinet for years. It's not loaded," said neighbor Ronnie Zwernemann. "In fact, I'll probably get rid of it now that I have a little granddaughter."
Odom has two prior convictions for theft and driving with a suspended license. Odom told detectives he had no idea there was a bullet in the chamber and they believe him. But he must still face criminal charges.
Aubrecht's family says they are now planning her funeral.
