Prison for burglary of home during Ike

BEAUMONT, TX The Jefferson County District Attorney's Office on Thursday announced the sentence for 53-year-old David Ellis McDaniel of Port Arthur.

Prosecutors say the homeowner, a Port Arthur city employee, knows McDaniel and at times tried to help the suspect when he was "down on his luck."

The burglary happened one week after Ike, which hit Southeast Texas on Sept. 13, as the evacuation process continued.

McDaniel admitted to police that he entered the house, when no one was home, to "borrow" a laptop computer. It was later recovered.

McDaniel had previous convictions for counterfeiting and conspiracy to counterfeit.
