Local lawmaker to propose trans fat ban

State Representative Carol Alvarado will announce the legislation in downtown Houston tomorrow. House Bill 1523 calls for all prepared and served food items to contain less than half a gram of trans fat per serving.

New York City passed a similar ban two years ago. Health officials say the artificial fats raise levels of bad cholesterol and increase the risk of stroke, diabetes and heart failure.

More than 500,000 people die from the disease each year, making it one of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Alvarado is expected to hold a press conference to announce legislation to ban artificial trans fats from Texas restaurants Thursday, March 5, 2009, beginning at 2:30pm.
