Orlovsky was originally drafted in the fifth round (145th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft by Detroit out of the University of Connecticut. He set UConn career records for most pass completions (916), pass attempts (1,567), yards passing (10,706), touchdown passes (84), total plays (1,710) and total yards (10,421). In his final game as a Husky, he earned Most Valuable Player honors at the 2004 Motor City Bowl.
The signing of Orlovsky comes two days after the Texans sent backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels to Minnesota.
