According to officials with La Porte ISD, an employee found the bat outside La Porte Elementary School on Tuesday. The bat was removed by La Porte animal control officers and sent to Harris County for further testing. That's where it was determined the bat was rabid.
The bat was found in an area where there is only limited student activity. It's not believed that any students came in contact with the animal. Parents have been reminded to talk to their children about the importance of avoiding wild animals, particularly bats.
Two other bats were found in and around the school on January 20. Neither of those bats was determined to be rabid. District officials are now trying to determine where the bats are coming from.
