Night of horror for local family

The woman killed was the mother of the man's girlfriend.

It all happened on at the Ambiance Townhomes on Richmond Rd at Synott in southwest Harris County around 9pm Thursday.

A neighbor who didn't want to be identified failed to hear the gunfire.

"It's very hard," she told us. "And just to know that I was sitting in my living room and didn't hear anything, it's frightening."

Harris County investigators tell us that Roydrick Jiles showed up at the complex and tried to take his girlfriend and her 17-month-old daughter.

When the child's grandmother, Elaine Walker, wouldn't let that happen, he allegedly shot her.

He took off with the two, taking them to an apartment off West Airport Road and that's where the mother flagged down a Houston police officer.

"The girlfriend was able to break free and notify an HPD officer in the area," said Sgt. Sidney Miller with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "When they returned back to where the suspected shooter was, they found he had shot himself."

Jiles was taken to the hospital, but it was too late for Walker. The neighbor tells us she saw at least part of the family together last week and never noticed anything that would lead to this.

"I saw them as a couple on Friday or Saturday," she said. "The dad was with the daughter, the little girl, and they were just hanging out."

At last check, Jiles is at Ben Taub Hospital. Should he survive his injuries, he'll face murder charges.
