Mitts was one of five soldiers aboard the UH-60 when it crashed Monday afternoon shortly after takeoff during a routine training exercise. The crash also killed 2nd Lt. Zachary Cook, 22, a recent Texas A&M graduate. The three others aboard were injured.
Mitts, who served with the Texas Army National Guard, was deployed to Iraq from 2006 to 2007.
Investigators from Fort Rucker, Ala., have arrived for the inquiry into the crash. Classes resume Tuesday following the winter break.
