Man admits he killed neighbor in 1989

AMARILLO, TX Andres Avila, 49, who served time in Mexico for a killing there, pleaded guilty Thursday to the 1989 shooting death of Juan Carlos Sotelo-Lara in 1989. State District Judge Don Emerson sentenced Avila after he admitted to pulling the trigger.

Avila became a suspect when he fled to Mexico, authorities have said. A motive for the shooting was never made clear, but witnesses reported the two men had been fighting.

Amarillo police said Avila was in a Mexican prison from 1995 until July for a murder he committed there. Mexican officials became aware of Avila's arrest warrant in Texas, contacted U.S. officials and extradited him.

Avila was returned to Texas on July 11, court records indicate.
