Firefighter injured battling apartment fire

HOUSTON It started just before 7am on the upper floor of an apartment complex off Rampart and Gulfton. It took crews about 35-minutes to put out the flames which damaged about six units. One resident told Eyewitness News that a couple of people who live in the apartment complexes on fire starting throwing out their furniture.

Extra crews were called in just in case.

"The first incident commander as they were coming out of the roof and it was traveling he thought to get some more people here. He's already turned some around. It's better to get them here and send them home than not get the help he needs," said District Fire Chief Tommy Dowdy with the Houston Fire Department.

The firefighter injured his ankle during a partial balcony collapse. He's expected to be okay. No one else was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
