Deadline to register to vote is today

HOUSTON Election Day is still 29 days away, but today is the deadline to register.

Since January 1, 2008, more than 100,000 new voters have already registered to vote. And over the weekend, there were several petitions and registration voter drives going on across the county and across the city. Several other drives will go on today because those forms must be postmarked by today or hand delivered to your county election officers by 5pm today.

The forms can be found at libraries, post offices and election offices. Residents cannot register to vote online, but they can find the registration form at the Texas Secretary of State's Web site to print out for submission.

Texas has more than 13 million registered voters. Total registration has grown by about half a million since the March primaries.

Early voting for the state of Texas begins on Monday, October 20 and runs through October 31.
