Whales and the City?

NEW YORK Cornell University researchers say they've captured the sounds of whales singing in the waters surrounding New York City.

The scientists report it's a first. They've recorded fin, humpback and North Atlantic right whales on mics placed about 13 miles from the entrance of New York Harbor and off the shores of Fire Island.

The researchers hope to use the data to better protect the endangered animals.
